Allergy
Relief
Allergies can be
a real pain in the nose and eyes to say the least, and at times can
even be life threatening. I myself use to have allergies for
the greater part of my life until I discovered how to rid myself of
those discomforts. Below is some of which I have learned, including
the actual process I use on most clients to rid them of those nasty
allergic discomforts using NLP, and hypnosis.
It is Dave Elman's theory that suggests; most neurological
symptoms have an initial point in time as a cause in the subjects history.
Chapter 19 of his wonderful text "Hypnotherapy"
for instance deals with allergies. It is Elman’s theory
that many allergies; those of which cause symptoms similar
to actions produced when crying, have associations to some past experience
in which the client wanted to cry. He calls this the crying syndrome
and associates it to hay fever and many other allergies.
It is Elman’s believe that allergies are naturally present,
and that at some point in time, the allergy becomes triggered
due to stress, and manifests itself. Then, via hypnoanalysis,
he regresses
the patient and attempts to pinpoint a period in which similar symptoms
are recognized, and hopefully this eliminates the allergy.
Due to my background in NLP and other studies, I have
a few other beliefs about allergies. It is common knowledge
that doctors and other members of the scientific community state that
cancer cells exist in the body, and sometimes in some people they become
triggered and grow becoming a problem. In Robert Dilts’ book “Beliefs:
Pathways to Health and Wellbeing”, he suggests that allergies
manifest once a person is exposed to a normally safe agent/s, when either
run down, or excessively stressed, and the body’s immune system
over-reacts, assuming the agent harmful. Once triggered, the immune
system maintains a memory of the agent and continues to attack it whenever
present, in turn causing the symptoms. Here we find a common element
with Elman’s theory, “stress” as a trigger. Dilts’
process when compared to Elman’s is much simpler in that all one
needs to do, is take a memory of symptom causes, and anchor
an association to something similar, yet pleasant without allergic
reactions, and boom barra bing, the allergy is gone.
When I first read about the procedure, I thought it was overly
simple, but in the matter of a few days I found that I no longer had
allergic reactions around cats, which I found amazing considering
I only read the book. Turns out that as I read about the procedure,
I naturally remembered my own allergy at the time, and so,
I guess I followed the procedure while reading. Since then, I have relieved
other allergic reactions including that of adverse reactions
to dairy products, which is considered to be pathological.
It is therefore my conclusion that Dilts’ allergy relief process
is much more useable because it can even be applied covertly as directed
in his most wonderful book “Beliefs” on pages 184, 185.
Here is the process in full as described by Robert
Dilts. The Fast Allergy Process Summary (from Beliefs).
1)
Calibrate: Ask, “What’s it
like for you when you’re in the presence of the allergen?”
Watch for the person’s physiology, eye accessing cues, breathing,
etc.
2) Explain the mistake of the immune system:
Explain that his/her immune system has made a mistake about something
being dangerous when it really wasn’t. The immune system has marked
out something as dangerous that’s not, in and of itself. It can
be retrained rather quickly.
Example: "I don’t know if you know
how the immune system works, but it is really quite interesting. What’s
happening with an allergy is that your immune system is overreacting
and has become overactive.
Your immune system has certain cells that reach out and ingest foreign
substances that enter the body. If one of these cells encounters a virus,
it ingests part of it but also displays one on top of itself like flag.
Like a victory flag, that is being held up, to alert the rest of the
immune system that the body has been invaded.
This flag alerts the helper T cells to possible danger. Their job is
to match the niches on the side of the flag that’s being held
up, to the niches that they have on their sides which mark substances
as dangerous. If there is a match, they will adhere to the substance
and send out a message immediately for help from the killer T cells.
The killer T cells come rushing in ready to fight. They come to where
the flag is being held up and explode the virus by injecting it with
a chemical.
This works out if you have a virus or bacteria, but with an allergy,
the killer T cell attacks your own healthy cells. Once the mistake has
been made in identifying the substance creating the allergy, and the
cell is coded in the body, the immune system will go into action immediately."
"To
recap, the immune system made a mistake about what was dangerous and
marked out substances that put the active part of the immune system
into action. Once that mistake has been made, and the cell is coded
in the body, the immune system will go into action immediately, every
single time. We can thank our immune system for operating in that way.
Once a cold virus or bacteria has been marked out, the immune system
will act to respond to that danger. It’s not very pleasant however,
when it goes into action when there is no danger."
3)
Check for ecology/ secondary gain: What would life be like without
this? Are there any positive or negative consequences? Use whatever
NLP techniques you need to at this point to deal with ecology
issues before proceeding.
4) a) Have the person dissociate: and
anchor the state of dissociation.
This is added reassurance that you can keep the person dissociated.
b) Find an appropriate counter-example resource:
Find a counter-example that is as similar to the allergen as
possible. Anchor that response. Make sure the person is associated
as you set the anchor. If possible let the person come up with
his own example of what is similar.
c) Ask the person how he wants to feel:
When he’s in the presence of the allergen. This might
be “the you, you want to be”
in the situation. Anchor this resource also.
5) Use all three of the anchors set in
step 4 to have the person see himself with these resources available:
I now fire off the three anchors together, as I ask “what
does this experience feel like?”
6) Gradually introduce the allergen in
the dissociated state: Using a plexiglas shield from
wall to wall is an easy way to establish dissociation. Have
him watch himself through the plexiglas, and have him slowly introduce
the allergen. Introduce it as a gradual process giving him
the opportunity to get used to it. Wait, at this point, until you see
a physiological shift. It’s like the immune system says, “All
right, I’ve got it. I’ll change the notches on my flag so
it doesn’t match up with any of the T cells I have.”
Example: "I
now want you to imagine a plexiglas shield and imagine seeing yourself
on the other side (as I fire off the first dissociated anchor)"..
Then while holding the first anchor I fire off the other two
anchors, and have him slowly introduce the allergen
into the experience, as I watch for a physiological shift. See below.
"Now, _____, I want you to imagine there’s
a plexiglas shield all the way across the front of this room, from wall
to wall, protecting you. And over there, on the other side of the plexiglas
you see _____. And you see _____ with this response that we’ve
just established. (Continues holding anchor) A _____ whose immune system
knows just how to respond appropriately to (the allergen). And as you
look at _____ over there, you know he has the kind of immune system
that knows how to respond appropriately. (Pause) OK. Now, I want you,
very gently, to put that _____ over there in a situation where he would
be around (the allergen); the kind that used to create problems for
him. Whatever it is. See _____ over there, knowing that he has this
response that we’ve anchored in, fully available to him. His immune
system does know how to respond appropriately. And you’ll notice
that _____changing over there, as he’s in (with the allergen).
And it may seem really strange to you inside to begin with. (Pause)
OK. That’s right."
7) Re-associate: Let go of the dissociation
anchor and have the person re-associate having the other two resources
still available, and have him imagine being exposed to the allergen
as you continue to hold the resource anchor.
"I want you to imagine yourself actually
exposed to the one time allergen. Really taste it and smell
it". (Still holding the two resource anchors).
8) Future Pace: Having him imagine a time
in the future when he will be in the presence of and exposed to the
allergen, using the two resource anchors.
" I want you now to imagine sometime in the
future when you will be exposed to that substance, and experience what
that will be like in this manner "(as I hold his resource
anchors).
9) Test: If you can actually test carefully
on the spot, do that. If not, re-calibrate to see if the physiology,
eye-accessing cues,
breathing, etc. have changed.
Here, I would do a re-calibration as an initial test due to the actual
extreme results of allergens, and then I would send him off
to the doctor for medical tests as a final check.
Another method used for
eliminating allergies is that of "Mapping Across Submodalities
Process Summary"
There is a way that you
can use counter-examples and submodalities in working with allergies.
Instead of using anchoring, you find out what submodalities
are present when the immune system is working appropriately and map
those across to where you have an inappropriate response. Often you
will find that there is one critical submodality difference.
1.
Calibrate.
2.
Explain the immune system’s mistake.
3.
Check for secondary gain/ecology issues.
4.
Find an appropriate resource/counter-example. Elicit the submodalities
for that counter-example. You can ask, “How do you think about
it?” These are the submodalities the person’s immune system
uses when it’s responding appropriately.
5.
Elicit the submodalities associated with the allergen situation.
These are the submodalities the person’s immune system uses when
it’s responding inappropriately.
6.
As the person thinks about the allergen, have him map across
the submodalities so that it matches the submodalities of the counter-example.
7.
Future pace.
8.
Test.
(Covert Example) - The other
day I was talking with a man wearing a coat and tie. He was telling
me how he was having trouble with his wife and how she’d nag at
him when he called her from work. I assumed he had a negative anchor
to her voice tone in the context of her nagging. Later I told him that
I was glad that I didn’t have to wear a tie and asked him if he
minded wearing one. When he accessed whether or not he minded, I anchored
the response visually by holding an imaginary tie knot in my collar.
I then asked him about some conversation he had with his wife when he
really was interested in what she was saying, while firing off my visual
anchor of holding the imaginary tie knot. Then I asked him
about her nagging and he had a very different response than he did the
first time he mentioned her nagging.
