Study Habits

Before I begin, it might be useful to point out a simple definition for the state of hypnosis. "Hypnosis is a state of focused attention", the deeper one goes the more directed at the topic at hand, and the more absorbed one becomes. Given the above statement to be true, what is learning and studying for that matter but a state of focused attention. Have you ever been able to grasp anything if your attention wasn't directed? I thought not, in turn what better a vehicle for learning other than that of hypnosis.

One doesn't have to be in a deep hypnotic state to absorb information, but a mild one in the classroom, or while studying is often useful. Similar to that suggested by some circles that baroque music be played; a mild trance will also suffice. What baroque music does is it helps the brain calm down and synchronize itself with the heart to about sixty beats per minute. In essence it provides for an optimum level of calmness so that one's attention can be directed easily, so I must ask, what is it that hypnosis does for us again? It allows us to reach a calm directed state of focused awareness.

With the use of self hypnosis, we are not only able to reach optimum states for learning, but we can do many things to enhance recall, we can change study habits, simply by offering ourselves hypnotic suggestions to do so while in self hypnotic trances. We could even create temporary or permanent anchors for making access of information readily available on command. At the most extreme end with a little help, or with practice we can change inner beliefs about oneself in order to re-adjust our behavior and attitudes towards a more fulfilling outcome. Remember whatever you believe will probably be, and unfortunately because of past failures, and or poisoned words from others, many of those being the people who are supposed to be teaching us, we have all had at one time or another a belief that wasn't very useful for us. An example of this might be someone believing she is not good at mathematics. What one person can do, so can another, it only takes the right attitude, belief, know how, and a little determination.

With all this said comes the question of using hypnosis for learning with children considered learning disabled. Personally I don't believe there is any such thing, but simply that of incompetent teachers that are either to lazy to, or simply lacking enough skills to reach certain people.

There are primarily two forms of learning disabilities which are very difficult to separate, but have been broken down here:

Learning Disabled Children- These children are of average intelligence, and show a discrepancy between their actual academic achievement and their expected achievement based on intelligence, and do not exhibit these problems due to other handicapping conditions. Studies have indicated that most learning disabled children are right brained whereas the educational system is directed at left brain thinking, which corresponds to the noticed difficulties with reading (dyslexia), mathematics (dyscalculia), handwriting (dysgraphia), or the spoken language.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder- Common traits within this category include, a lack of sustained concentration, impulsiveness, restlessness, noncompliance, exclusion of brain damage, psychosis, mental retardation, and it is said that many children outgrow these symptoms by adolescence, although I don’t believe I have as of yet, but I am still learning.

As to the hypnotizability of learning disabled children, studies although non-conclusive, have shown that these children are just as hypnotizable as all others, if not more so, which to me states that there is something very wrong with the evaluation criteria, because trance is about the focusing of attention. Children are playful creatures and cannot be expected to think in the analytical methods expected of an adult. If teaching systems were re-organized to suit that of individuals, I am sure there would be far less redundant classifications put upon our children.
