Hypnosleep

Hypnosleep is a term used for attaching or inducing the hypnotic state in a sleeping subject.

During the process of natural sleep, all body rhythms slow down simultaneously including that of respiration, heart rate, metabolism, etc. In the state of hypnosis, natural body rhythms stay very much the same as in a normally relaxed conscious subject, unless hypnotic suggestions are taken, and accepted otherwise.

Dave Elman is of the position that a sleeping subject can be guided into a state of hypnosis, which is much deeper than the coma, or Esdaile state. He further suggests that a subject in the state of hypnosis cannot be induced into the actual physiological state of sleep, without a post-hypnotic suggestion to fall asleep once lifted from the hypnotic state.

Personally, I have had quite a few hypnotic subjects including myself pass right through the hypnotic state into the actual sleep state during hypnotic induction procedures. My training also indicates that we pass through the state of hypnosis as we fall asleep, as well as when we wake up. Without physiological measuring devices of my own for accurate observation, I would have to reserve my own beliefs on this matter for future studies.

The natural state of sleep is a process by which one becomes literally unconscious, and therefore would have no conscious recollection of any happenings. It has also been observed that in the deepest states of hypnosis, there is a natural tendency to have very little if any recall at all.

This hypnosleep, described by Dave Elman goes beyond the depth of the coma state, which classifies it as very deep hypnosis, so characteristically, amnesia should be a natural part of the phenomena. Nonetheless, hypnotic suggestion for amnesia should be provided if amnesia is desired.

As for Dave Elman’s position on hypnosleep, he believes it is very useful for extreme hypnotic work, but believes it deserves much more study than he has been able to provide.

Hypnosis in Sleep
To obtain hypnosis in sleep, the following steps are necessary:

1. Count the respirations of the client. Make sure breathing is down to about seven or eight times a minute; six or seven a minute is even better. If the client is breathing too fast, you will be wise to wait until he is more soundly asleep.

2. Approach the subject very gently, for the aim is to bypass the critical faculty without arousing him from sleep. The bypass must occur instantly. The following speech may be extremely valuable if spoken very gently, but very confidently: “This is (your name) speaking. You can hear me, but you can’t wake up. You can hear me, but you can’t wake up. You can hear me, but you can’t wake up."

3. The client is usually in such deep sleep that the above must be repeated several times before it seems to penetrate his unconscious. Continue: “I’ll know you’re hearing me when your thumb, which I’m going to touch, begins to rise. I’ll know you’re hearing me when your thumb moves. You can hear me, but you can’t wake up.”

4. When the thumb responds, continue to talk gently, compounding hypnotic suggestions as you proceed.

5. When you have finished giving the desired hypnotic suggestions, or have concluded the hypnoanalysis, your next step is to remove the hypnotic state, so that the client can continue an entirely natural sleep state until he wakes up by himself. Do it as follows: “When I stop talking to you, you will revert to the state you were in before I started talking to you. You will sleep deeply, and in the morning, you’ll awaken completely refreshed – won’t even remember I’ve been talking to you, but you’ll feel so much better about the ____ (operation, or will not be bothered any more by this allergic reaction or whatever hypnotic suggestions is appropriate). You won’t worry about it a bit. You just know we wouldn’t be ____ (performing the operation) if we didn’t know it was going to be absolutely safe for you, and easy for you to take. And you’ll get well so fast. Now go to sleep very soundly, and I’ll see you in the morning … I’ll stop talking now."
