Presuppositions

Presuppositions are ideas assumed to be true within a statement.

In a hypnotic induction, presuppositions are used by focusing the subject’s attention on how, when, where, or with whom a hypnotic response will occur, thus indirectly conveying the assumption that a hypnotic response will occur.

Unlike traditional direct hypnotic suggestions, this Ericksonian hypnotic technique bypasses resistance by utilizing the clients unconscious processes, while having his/her conscious mind simply put to wondering "what will occur and when".

The following excerpt nicely provides an example as to how hypnotic responses can be presupposed within a conversational statement.
"And I really don't know exactly how you will begin to develop a trance … You can go into trance with your eyes open or closed … you can go into trance thinking consciously about how you can't … you can go into a light trance, a medium trance, or a deep trance … and so I'm wondering which way will be best for you … and whether you drop all the way into trance immediately or wait a while is not that important … what's more important is your own ability to discover the way of developing a trance that best fits you as an individual … some people prefer to relax a bit, shift down into a trance for a while, then come back up before going all the way back down … Others prefer to wait a few minutes and then drop deeply down, all the way down, at once … others prefer to go in and out, back and forth, up and down, until at some point in time they go down and forget to come back up for a while …"

The following points should be followed when offering presuppositions:
a) Provide the client with an illusionary freedom to choose which response to make,
b) Every hypnotic suggestion is to be indirect, and
c) Provide every possibility that can manifest, which reduces the chance of resistance, yet the biasing of a particular one can be emphasized heavily to lead the client to that particular aspect.
