Reframing
Reframing is the
process of changing the content, or frame of reference of an experience,
or interpretation, so that it has a different meaning.
There are a number of
different methods to provide for reframing, and an entire book
can and has been written on the subject (see Bandler,
and Grinder's "Reframing", 1982), but essentially, the
idea is to provide a new interpretation for the presented situation.
The
following story should enlighten the reader.
A woman comes for therapy because she gets overly excited anytime someone
in her family messes up the house. This woman is a clean freak, and
constantly vacuums the instant a footprint is seen on her carpets. While
in trance, she is asked to imagine her house clean and sparkling,
after which she smiles to her fulfillment, and then the therapist offers
the thought that the house will forever stay clean because it means
that all her loved ones are gone. Immediately the woman gets upset,
and is then asked to imagine all kinds of footsteps all over the carpets,
dishes in the sink and so on, which means that her loved ones are there
to keep her company. Upon this, the woman smiles and realizes that a
little bit of mess is simply a showing that she is not alone, and she
is now happy to tidy up after, and cook for her family.
