Trance Termination

There are many methods used for trance termination from the simple stage hypnotists snap of a finger through counting a person back up to consciousness. Below is a typical Ericksonian style trance termination which offers a little more respect to the individual, and allows for one to come back at his or her own pace, which is my own preference.

This trance termination procedure consists of 5 steps:
1. Reviewing and rehearsing trance learning

In this step the individual reviews what she has experienced, what she has learned and how she may use these new skills in her daily life.

2. Ratification suggestions
In this step the individual is instructed to leave behind things that are better forgotten for now, yet at the same time suggestions are offered that this material may become available when needed.

3. Reorientation to wakeful awareness
In this step instructions are given to gradually bring the individual’s awareness back to the here and now.

4. Distractions
The purpose of any designated distraction, is to prevent the client from analyzing the trance state at this point which could nullify the hypnotic suggestions. The distracting comments may relate to a conversation, or an incident that occurred before the trance induction; it may be a general statement that has nothing to do with the session, or the client per se; the distraction may even direct the client to consider future plans in order to prevent focusing on the immediate past.

5. Follow-up questions
Once the client has been distracted from analyzing the trance, the hypnotherapist may ask for general feedback regarding the hypnotic experience. If the client doesn’t feel like talking or doesn’t know how to put in words what he experienced, the hypnotherapist should respect this.

This trance termination procedure is important because it gives the client the opportunity to gently emerge into waking consciousness and reorient to the present. It also gives the opportunity for the unconscious mind to close any doors that need to be closed at the time, and for any ideas to be properly planted, like seeds in the earth, and given opportunity to grow in strength until they are strong enough to sprout.
