Waking Hypnosis
The common definition of waking
hypnosis sounds like a funny one, and one which could provide much
discussion, because it states that, you have waking hypnosis
at any time hypnotic effects are achieved without trance,
in which the bypass of the critical
faculty has been achieved as well as the implanting of selective
thinking, but without the use of the hypnotic state.
A classic example of waking hypnosis is the placebo
effect, often used by physicians when passing out medication. It
has been recorded in many books that physicians often prescribe a simple
sugar pill to a patient having dramatic results of curing the patients
ailments. In fact, the medical industry it turns out, tests their new
medications on the public with every new drug against a placebo
/ sugar pill, and most impressing, is that the fact that often, the
prescribing physician doesn’t even have knowledge of the placebo,
causing the physician to provide a truly realistic belief when stating
that “this dramatic new drug will fix the
problem”. It is this congruent belief put forth as a statement
that has the effect of instilling belief within the patient providing
the cure. The patient believes she’ll get well and she does.
Another form of waking hypnosis I would say is the “forgetting
syndrome”, when all of a sudden we try to remember something,
which could have been what we were last talking about before an interruption,
and we say to ourselves, “I can’t
remember”. By repeating the statement “I
can’t remember”, not only are we bypassing our critical
faculty because, we do know that the information is there, but
we also implant selective thinking around the thought of not
remembering (I'm sorry I just forgot where I was). A wonderful thing
to have control of when used properly, just ask someone their name,
swipe your hand across their face while stating “I
can’t remember” and watch the astounding effect,
truly a remarkable thing.
Waking suggestion, on the other hand is having the effect of
a hypnotic suggestion acted upon without the bypass of the
critical faculty. Simply by taking
a deep breath in the midst of someone will
probably cause them to take a deep breath,
in fact you might have just found yourself taking
a deep breath as you read these
words. It feels so good to just take
a deep breath, doesn’t it? And it’s so nice to simply
say in the presence of someone, "a coffee would feel so good right
now", and watch as they get up and make you a cup, so
that you have more energy for fun.
